Gathering the full texts of Baroque source material, both in the original German and in English translation, Quentin Faulkner explores registration of Bach’s works as well as other compositions of the period. He also examines several relevant organs. A large section of the book delves into specific registrations, guidelines for the use of stops or combinations, and various sources providing general comments. There is an interesting chapter on the practice of manual changes and useful notes, bibliography and an index to the information found in the sources. This book contains the following Bach’s registration practices and preferences; what do the organs available to Bach tell us?; sources providing general principles of registration or comments on registration; sources providing stop combinations or remarks on the use of certain stops; sources providing registration instructions applied to specific pieces of organ music; and change of manuals. Quentin Faulkner (b. 1943) A graduate of Westminster Choir College, Southern Methodist University, and Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music. He is Professor Emeritus of Organ and Music Theory/History at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
