Fascinating and historically significant Weller Dickensware vase. Hand-incised portrait of a Charles Dickens character (James Carker?), who is clearly based on Oscar Wilde. By comparing the pottery vase to this engraving from the original London edition, you can see that the Weller portrait is based on that engraving: https://www.mediastorehouse.com/fine-art-storehouse/digital-vision-vectors/charles-dickens-dombey-son-withers-stairs-14632263.html.

On the other side (hard to read because the glaze is such a dark brown) is this quotation from the novel DOMBEY AND SON: "Withers, meeting him on the stairs, stood amazed at the beauty of his teeth and at his brilliant smile."

This design is difficult to locate today and of great interest to several groups of collectors. LGBTQ folks might find it a scary precursor to Oscar Wilde's later persecution.

No nicks, chips, hairlines, or repairs. Note the bottom has a prominent stilt mark and other finishing oddities.
