This has maple like leaves so dark they may appear almost fully black in certain lighting. What makes this perennial stand out is its gargantuan 8-inch flowers that are hard to miss, even from a distance. 

These flowers are not only unique because of their size but also due to their shape. The petals grow in a spiral pattern, with a deep cherry hue in the very center, and a cotton candy shade of pink with white edges throughout the rest of the plant’s petals. Your perennial will grow these amazing flowers around the summertime, and the whole plant may reach a mature height and spread of about 4 feet.
 
The five pink petals of swamp rose-mallow flowers each have a red to purple center and are 4-6 in. long, and surround many stamens. Flowers nod slightly from leaf axils and occur singly.
