DATE SHOT: 1946 SUBJECT: George Dickey APPROXIMATE SIZE: 3-1/8"x4-1/8" TYPE CLASSIFICATION: Original COMMENTS / CONDITION: One of a group of photos of Chicago White Sox players taken in "Conlon style" in front of the dugout. Each photo in this group has been trimmed to about 3-1/8"x5-1/8" and shows evidence of having been affixed in a scrapbook at some point. The Velox photo paper that each is printed on dates to the 1920's to late 1940's, so it's right there with the period in which these were shot. See scans for further details including condition. George Willard Dickey (Skeets) was born in Kensett, AR and died in 1976 in DeWitt, AR. He played major league baseball from 1935 to 1947 as catcher for the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox. He was the younger brother of Hall of Famer Bill Dickey. He was one of many major leaguers who saw his baseball career interrumpted when he joined the US Navy during World War II (1943-45). His most productive season came with the 1947 White Sox, when he appeared in a career-high 83 games while hitting .223 with one home run, six doubles, and 27 runs batted in. Explanation of Type Classifications: Type 1 = A 1st generation photograph, developed from the original negative, during the period (within two years of when the shot was taken). Type 2 = A 1st generation photograph, developed from the original negative, during a later period (more than two years after the shot was taken). Type 3 = A 2nd generation photograph, developed from a duplicate negative or wire transmission, during the period. Type 4 = A 2nd generation photograph (or 3rd or later generation), developed from a duplicate negative or wire transmission, during a later period. Original = A 1st generation photograph, developed from the original negative, which appears to be of the period but for which a print date cannot be determined for definitive Type classification. Essentially, a photo we feel is a Type 1, but which lacks certain elements necessary for definitive dating of the print.
