Antique late Georgian-early Victorian era 14K gold mounted carved onyx mourning brooch with inscribed dedication. Very unique handmade item. The brooch measures approx. 1 9/16"(40mm) x 1 5/16"(34mm) and has a gross weight of 14.2 grams. The back of the brooch is inscribed 'Robert Livingston, died April 24th,1839, Aged 29 years.' The inner, raised piece of onyx is carved in the form of and English or French soldier of that period. Nicely done. The outer piece of Onyx shows some chipping in the corners. The gold is unmarked as to content but has been professionally tested and is fully guaranteed to be at least 14k. The actual fastening pin on the back only tests as 10K and was possibly replaced at some point. Please enlarge all pics for best details.
