Description
This exceptional and rare antique German 935 standard silver tea set consists of a spirit tea kettle, cream jug, sugar bowl, three glass containers and a pair of cups and saucers.
Each silver component of this unusual and rare picnic tea service has a plain circular rounded form.
The body of the tea kettle, sugar bowl and cream jug are plain and unembellished.
The silver sugar bowl and tea kettle are each fitted with a plain cover surmounted with a ring loop style finial; the cover to the kettle is hinged and the sugar bowl is push fit.
The silver tea kettle retains the original plain hinged handle and tapering spout.
The silver cream jug and sugar bowl have plain angular silver handles.
The fine and impressive kettle is supported on the original detachable three-legged stand, fitted with a detachable spirit burner.
The plain rectangular glass containers are fitted with plain silver covers; it can be determined that these varying sized vessels were crafted for tea, milk and sugar.
The impressive cream jug and sugar bowl retain the original gilded interiors.
This antique travelling tea service is fitted to the original hinged leatherette carrying case, embellished with the initials 'M. R. B' and securing with a suitcase buckle box lock.
The cover of the case lifts, allowing the anterior portion of the box to open and provide access to the individual compartmentalised leatherette and velvet lined interior.
The hallmarks to the underside of each piece include:
National mark: Crescent moon and crown
Silver quality/purity mark: 935 (935/1000)*
Maker's mark: C. W. Jr
Such examples are often electroplated, it is rare to locate a travelling boxed silver tea set crafted in solid silver.
* German silver is typically crafted in 800 standard, this higher standard indicates the high quality of the service.
