Antique Folder-Style Cabinet Card Photograph. Identified from writing on the front that reads, "Mrs. W.T. Currie, Aunt Amy." Photo by a studio in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Amy was the wife and evangelical partner of the Rev. Walter Thomas Currie (1858-1915) a missionary in Africa referred to as "The Canadian Livingston" and the subject of the book, "Missionary Adventures in Africa: Letters of Rev. Walter T. Currie." A two-sheet photocopy excerpt from their biographical sketch in "Imperial Vancouver Island" by J.F. Bosher will be included with the purchase of this photo. Amy was reportedly born in Ireland but emigrated to Canada in 1894 where she married Dr. Currie. She was the sister of the Rev. Harry J. Johnston who resided with his family in New Jersey. Measures approximately 2.5 x 5.25 with folder flaps closed. Condition: This is an original photograph, not a copy or reproduction. It is in very good condition aside from a chip in the mount near the upper right corner. Comments: This photo came from a single estate of mostly interrelated New Jersey individuals (all sold individually) taken in Orange, Hackettstown, and Paterson which include: Rev. George W. Smith and his wife Mary P. Smith (parents of Mary Edwina Smith Johnston, Alice Wilde Smith, and Anabel Smith. Alice and Mary Edwina were known to have attended Centenary Collegiate Institute (CCI) circa 1897-98, a private liberal arts college in Hackettstown, New Jersey, founded by the Newark Methodist Episcopal Church.); Mary Edwina’s husband Rev. Harry J. Johnston and their son Edward Wilde Johnston; Emma B. Wilde; Beatrice Wilde Bryant, her husband Luther P. Bryant, and their daughters Elizabeth & Beatrice (photos taken in Northampton, MA); John Lees (brother of Mrs. Edward Wilde, aka “Grandma Wilde.” He resided in or near Leesburg, Florida with his wife Christie); Eleanor Smith, daughter of Peter Smith and niece of Rev. George W. Smith; Amy Johnston Currie, sister of Rev. Harry J. Johnston, and her husband Rev. Walter Thomas Currie, who were missionaries in Africa; Louisa “Lilly” Johnston and William Rowan “Larry” Johnston of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada.
