1657 Joan of ARC Pucelle French
Hundred Years War Chapelain Jean D’Arc FAMOUS
“One life is all we have and we live it as
we believe in living it. But to sacrifice what you are and to live without
belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying.”
– Joan of Arc
Until the end of the 18th-century, the story of Joan of Arc
was merely a legend, and little was written in histories about her life. She is
considered a heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. Joan of Arc has been
a popular figure in cultural history since the time of her death, and many
famous writers, filmmakers and composers have created works about her. Cultural
depictions of Joan of Arc have continued in films, theatre, television, video
games, music, and performances to this day.
However, there were important 17th-century works dedicated to
Joan of Arc’s memory including this work by Chapelain, ‘La Pucelle ou La France Delivree’. This poem was extensively
attacked by Boileau following its first publishing in 1656.
