Description: Episode 8 – TEFAF 2, Show 1 – Maastricht Agnew’s, Julian Agnew, London Two rare works by Luca Giordano, painted in 1700, concerned with journeys: “The Song of Miriam” and The Journey of Rebecca”, from the famous 19th century collection of Lord Dover. Noortman, Robert Noortman, Maastricht Robert Noortman, one of the three founders of the Maastricht Fair, describes one of the pictures on his stand, as one of the naughtiest in the Fair. The picture was painted in 1624 by the Dutch painter, Werner van den Valckert, partly trompe l’oeil, with a very Modern look, with a “message” indicating that the girl in the portrait is available. Martyn Gregory, London Martin talks about his “China Trade” paintings, done by Chinese artists for a Western audience, in the late 18th and early 19th century. He gives a great background of the history of the China Trade, the Opium Wars. One of the paintings is from the Roosevelt collection. Vanderven & Vanderven Oriental Art, Floris Venderven, Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands A splendid handsome and brutish Tang tomb guardian in terracotta, from the seventh or eighth century, with a typical non-Chinese face, more Persian, dressed like a warrior in armour, ready to fight off the evil spirits; A Chinese Imari plate from around 1700, bearing the inventory mark of the Elector of Saxony, from the personal collection of Augustus the Strong, King of Poland, Elector of Saxony, who collected more than 20,000 pieces of Chinese and Japanese porcelain in his life. Pelham Galleries, Alan Rubin, London Alan talks about three very contrasting pieces of French furniture, each unique of its kind and of exquisite quality: A late 18th century desk in white lacquer by the great French cabinetmaker, Claude-Charles Saulnier, with a Chinoiserie decoration and sumptuous gilt mounts; A very grand table made for Louis XIV at Versailles by his “menuisier en ébène du Roi” in the 1660s, in ivory and tortoise shell; A pair of Empire Jardinières, in the form of ancient incense burners. Fritz Payer Kunsthandel, Zurich Specialists in objets d’art, mainly in silver Fritz shows George an unusual tankard, without a cover, with a special handle and straight form, made in 1627 in the Baltic area, in silver gilt, i.e. gilded silver, bearing the coat of arms of a famous family of the East Prussian area; A tazza, which pre-dates a tankard, made in 1575 in Augsburg, ordered by the family Haller von Hallerstein, with their coat of arms and an etched decor; A crucifix in agate with silver mounts, made in south Germany around 1640-50 for a famous family. Galerie Cazeau–Beraudière, Jacques de la Beraudière, Paris An exceptional Picasso painting from the artist’s own collection and one of his drawings; A selection of seven drawings done by Van Dongen for a magazine called “L’Assiette au Beurre”, illustrating the life of a prostitute; A fine Max Ernst picture of 1940. Galerie Chevalier, Dominique Chevalier, Paris An outstanding Savonnerie carpet, from Aubusson, made during the Empire period in the early 1800s, with a special wide border, with swans and a huge rosette in the centre, in brilliant colours, in perfect condition.
