"Zenit-3M" is a small-format single-lens reflex camera produced at the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant from 1962 to 1970. A total of 781,678 units were produced. The index “M” in the name has two interpretations: the modernization of the previous “Zenit-3” and the first letter of the surname of the designer Nikolai Marenkov.

In 1961-1962, the Crystal camera was produced in Krasnogorsk, which replaced the first Zenits (Zenit, Zenit-S and Zenit-3), assembled using the technology of the FED and Zorkiy cameras. After the newest injection molding line was launched at KMZ, it became possible to produce housings of complex shapes. The body of the Crystal, like other new models of equipment, became one-piece and combined the front slide of the film channel and the base of the lens mounting flange into a common part. Thanks to this, after disassembling and repairing the camera, there was no need to adjust the working distance. The main advantage of the new case was the folding rear wall, which greatly simplified film loading compared to all previous Zenits.

A noticeable modernization was the abandonment of the mirror drive using a cable, which was replaced with a more reliable cam mechanism. The release button moved to the center of the frame counter, and its pusher was located inside the cocking shaft. Since 1962, the upper shield of the Crystal, instead of casting, began to be made by cold stamping from brass, and in this form the camera received the new name “Zenit-3M”. Like the base model, the Zenit-3M was unified in terms of shutter and film rewind mechanism with the Zorkiy-6 rangefinder camera. The result of further modernization was the experimental model “Zenit-3EM”, equipped with a selenium non-coupled exposure meter. The camera was not mass-produced, being an intermediate development before the appearance of Zenit-E.
