What is ORIN?
When a monk reads a sutra, it is believed that an orin is sounded to signal to the sky that the reading is about to begin. The orin originated from a bird called "rin" that chirped in sorrow when the Buddha passed away. The orin was created as a musical instrument that produced a tone similar to that of the bird's call.

What is a MOKUGYO?
Mokyogyo is a Buddhist ritual utensil, round in shape, hollow inside, and carved on the outside. It is also used as a musical instrument.

It is struck with a stick called a "bai" or "shimoku" to sound it during sutra reading. They are made in the shape of a fish, since it was once believed that fish, which do not close their eyes even when they sleep, were sleepless. It is also meant to set the rhythm and to wake the user from sleepiness, and when struck, it produces a sinking "pokupoku" sound.
