1945 Copper Brass Navigation Masthead Bow Lamp WW2 Alderson and Gyde Birmingham

A stunningly beautiful heavy duty lamp, made from copper and brass and stamped Alderson & Gyde Ltd Birmingham, 1945 - they were based at Trident Works, Hall Street, Birmingham.  Top quality British Admiralty / Royal Navy pattern ship's lantern. Marked as 'Bow Port Patt 23' on an applied brass plaque, with a clear glass Fresnel lens to the front which is intact with no cracks or chips.  This is one of what would have been a pair of lamps mounted on the front of a ship to either side of the bow.

The body of the lamp is in very good condition for its age, with some age and use related marks here and there, please check photos carefully - I am happy to provide more photos, please get in touch if you would like to see more!
I believe that someone has tried to electrify this lamp in the past as there is a cut in the copper back plate at the base and some screw holes in the top of the internal oil lamp workings (the back plate of this looks to have been cut down also).  I have not tried to light it so I would say that the oil lamp workings would need some restoration if it is intended to be used.  Both curved reflectors are inside the lamp.  There are a couple of dents in the body which I have included in the photos.

When it came to me it had been on display in a pub for many years and had a nasty coating of nicotine and grease, which I have carefully removed, I have then polished the item gently.  This was the only choice for this item as it was so filthy when it got to me!  I've had it a while though and the natural patina of the copper and brass has started to return, as can be seen from the photos.

Please check photos carefully and ask any questions you may have.

Dimensions - This lamp is approximately 40cm high and 30cm across and weighs approximately 6kg.

Due to size, weight and fragility this item will need lots of packaging and a very sturdy box to be posted, hence the postage cost.  I would urge potential buyers to collect if at all possible, I am happy to discuss arrangements such as meeting halfway if that helps!

Thanks for looking!

So, to the serious bit - I take great care to take honest and descriptive photographs, within the limits of digital photography. Please study the photos and descriptions in the listing carefully as they form the legal description of the item. If the item is clearance or B-grade I will highlight the reason for this in both photos and description.

All items are dispatched via Royal Mail. I will ensure the item is packed well so you receive it in perfect condition. Alternative postage arrangements such as 'signed for' can be arranged if you contact me BEFORE purchasing as this may incur an extra cost.
