It allows you to grasp the trivet to remove. you can warm this trivet if you're using for bread and keep your bread/rolls warm while they're on the table. The trivet is oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe. Fruit also displays beautifully in this basket. Used, but like new. No flaws. We've moved and I no longer have a place to put it.
