About Uzbek Ikat Fabric
In Uzbekistan, ikat fabrics are known as “abr,” which means “cloud” in Persian. The term “abr-bandi” refers to the binding technique that gives ikat its characteristic cloud-like pattern. Skilled ikat masters meticulously tie off and resist-dye the threads to create these intricate designs. In the past, multiple dyers were involved in the process, each specializing in a specific color.
Once the dyed threads are threaded onto the loom, the pattern becomes visible, and the weaving process is relatively straightforward.
During the Soviet era, ikat fabrics were initially handmade by craftsmen’s cooperative unions called artels. However, these exceptional handmade ikats were gradually replaced by those produced by large textile combines established by the Soviets in Uzbekistan during the 1960s and '70s. While patterns were still created manually, machines were introduced to bind the threads to some extent. Eventually, the weaving process became fully automated. Unfortunately, synthetic dyes were not used diligently during this period, resulting in many textiles produced between 1970 and 1990 being prone to color fading.
