This RARE metal can is embossed with "R I L I N E S" in the front. I take that to stand for the ROCK ISLAND LINES, established in 1852 and servicing Chicago to Joliet.

The 9"x9" tin can was meant to hold liquid (water, kero or most likely oil) for use on the railroad line.

It was well made, with bands at the seams, a riveted handle and is fairly heavy. It has a removable, handled lid (punctured 'hole's for easy pouring), and is attached with a medium weight 5-inch chain.

There is no rust at all--only different colors of metal. It is fairly shiny, and would make a great display item.
