Here is an interesting set of government ordered pottery, the base by George Jones and Sons and the lid by New Hall Pottery.  They were ordered "to a pattern" from various producers who made them, thus they were interchangeable once they were put into service.  The GVIR show these were made for government use, likely military.  Different levels of quality were made, the serving crockery for the House of Parliament likely being of extremely good quality but other sets of dishes; "back stairs" items would have been of inferior decoration though, no less serviceable.  I found some online information about New Hall pottery that said they closed their decorating department in something like 1944 which would then slot them as makers of utilitarian pottery.  George Jones I haven't read about though I do like his country and western recordings of the 1960's and on.

So, this baby is 11 1/4" long and stands 5 1/4" tall at the top of the handle.  The lid doesn't fit the lower perfectly well.  It fits, yes but doesn't seat perfectly well.  It's certainly usable though the lid could afford to be 1/8" shorter.  For what it is though, an example of wartime and cold war dated crockery, it's just fine.

This could be British, it could be Canadian, Australian, any commonwealth government department for that matter because Canada for one, imported millions of pieces of British pottery for a hundred years before and after sorting out our own indigenous pottery industry.

Best of luck and thanks for looking at another sale by The Mighty Atom.
