I have here for sale a book entitled THE HISTORY OF INDIA, Vols I-II by the Honourable Mountstuart Elphinstone, Vols I and II.  Second editions, Vol I was published in 1841 and Vol II in 1843, by John Murray London.  Vol I has a very large fold out b/w map of India at the front.  Vol I covers Introduction, Hindus, Mahometans.  Vol II covers Kings of Delhi up to the Accession of the House of Timur, From the Conquest of Baber to the Accession of Akber, State of India up to the Accession of Akber; Akber; Jehangir - Shah Jehan, Aurangzib (or Alamgir); Successors of Aurangzib.  


Mountstuart Elphinstone FRSE (6 October 1779 – 20 November 1859) was a Scottish statesman and historian, associated with the government of British India. He later became the Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai) where he is credited with the opening of several educational institutions accessible to the Indian population. Besides being a noted administrator, he wrote books on India and Afghanistan. His works are pertinent examples of the colonial historiographical trend.


Bound by H Bull in Devizes in full calf leather hardboards with gilt border.  5 raised bands, gilt tooling, a black leather title block and brown leather volume block, both with gilt lettering/numbering.  Small part of volume block leather is missing on Vol II.  Chipped to head of spine on both volumes. Marbled page edges.  Gilt dentelle to the board edges.  Pages clean and firm.  Vol I - 619 pages, Vol II - 688 pages.  Condition: fine.  22 x 14 cm.
