1986 £2 Two Pound Proof Gold Coin (Double Sovereign)

This 1986 Proof gold Double Sovereign features the Scottish Thistle design and the third portrait of Elizabeth II. Due to their status as British Legal tender they are Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exempt, so they are a good choice for British investors.
We are often asked "Is the £2 coin in my change made of gold?" -the answer is almost always "No". Versions of this coin were released in base metal and are circulating fairly commonly. As shown in the second picture - there are some fairly obvious differences between the gold and base metal versions. If your coin is thicker than the current bi-metal £2 then it is not gold. If it's a similar thickness to a 10p coin - then it could be gold and worth significantly more than it's face value.
