On offer in this auction is a
super and genuine
Victorian
Silver Plated and Oak Coopered
Tavern Tankard
…..beautifully engraved on the
lid as an award or trophy presentation tankard and dated 1882 in great condition.
****
The inscription on the lid reads:
Revd J.A.Cruikshanks
¼ Mile Handp
Presented By Hon. E. Ward
Won by E. Joicey
(45 yds)
March 1882
I think this may possibly be a
swimming trophy; but not sure – this is surely worth some serious research on
the named individuals to try and discover what this really is!
The word Handp – is the abbreviation
for ‘Handicap’ – and the letter ‘d’ has a surface mark over the top.
*****
The tankard itself is ‘coopered’ –
just like an old beer barrel – with the silver-plated hoops keeping everything
in place.
There is just one screw missing
from the bottom hoop – but an easy replacement and it does display beautifully
as it is!
The pouring spout to the front,
is the most fantastic and incredibly detailed ‘Green Man’ head, which has some
old polish stuck in the crevices too.
On one side, the varnish on the oak
has worn quite thin and through – on the other sides it all seem in great
condition. Again, I’m sure this could easily be re-varnished if needed or displayed
with the better side outwards!
****
It is stamped on the base:
1570
…which I presume is a pattern
number?
On the inside of the lid, it is
stamped:
18 (with a downward pointing
arrow)
The lid also features a pair of
crossed arrows and a wreath – have a look at the close up photographs for the
full details.
The inside has a creamy white
ceramic liner, which is unfortunately cracked in several places. I haven’t
tested it for water-tightness; but you could always pop a plastic beaker inside
if you wanted to use this as an unusual flower vase?
I’ve tried to identify who could
have made this stunning tankard; but so far – I have been unsuccessful I’m
afraid. Hopefully some keen silver and silver-plate collector might know who
this belongs to – the workmanship is absolutely superb!
The silver-plating looks to be in
excellent condition, it has worn just a little around the handle and a few
other places – but not much at all. It’s really hard to pick this up on the
photographs, but I have tried to show this.

This is sure to be a wonderful
addition to any trophy or tankard collection!
The Tankard measures
approximately:
15.5cm (just over 6”) diameter
(side to side across the base)
11.5cm (4.5”) diameter (side to
side across the open mouth at the top)
20.5cm (8.25”) wide (from back of
handle to front edge of the pouring spout)
25cm (410”) high (to top of the handle)
Please check out all of the
photographs as I’ve tried to show all the various details.
Keep an eye on my
other listings as I have some great items being listed over the next few weeks!
