Tokina is one of the top Japanese independent lens manufacturers, and this wide angle to portrait zoom is from the company's premier AT-X series. This designation was reserved for the top-of-the-line lenses in the range. The lens is in Olympus OM manual focusing fitting, and is adaptable to many digital cameras (adapter not included) with manual focusing and other restrictions. This one is in fully working order and very good condition, supplied with original soft case and instructions, generic front and Olympus rear caps. Please read the full description for more important compatibility information.

The focal length range is excellent for general use covering everything from 28mm and 35mm wide angle, through 50mm standard to 70mm and 85mm short telephoto/portrait, plus of course all the focal lengths in between. It's the ideal range to keep on your camera, suitable for a huge range of subjects including landscapes, interiors, group shots, portraits and many more. The lens covers the full frame at the marked focal lengths on cameras such as the Panasonic S or Sony A7 series and other 24x36mm types (adapters not included).

With a suitable adapter (not included) OM manual lenses are usable with restrictions on Olympus, Panasonic and other Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds digital cameras, with effective focal lengths doubled due to the smaller sensors. This makes the field of view equivalent to a 56-170mm zoom with manual focusing and diaphragm, compatible with metered manual and aperture priority auto exposure and stopped down metering. On selected models the IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilizer) system works to reduce camera shake at slow shutter speeds, with the focal length set manually.

The lens focuses down to under 0.9m (35") at all focal lengths, with distances clearly marked in feet and meters plus infrared indexes. The focusing ring is large with a patterned rubber grip, and operates very smoothly. There's a separate close focus mode available beyond 85mm, complete with lock to prevent accidental use. This brings focusing down to slightly greater than 1:4 (one quarter life size) – a reproduction ratio that most suppliers class as macro – filling the frame with a subject as small as 96x144mm (4x6") on film, and even smaller on many digital cameras.

Auto diaphragm and full aperture metering, compatible with all exposure and metering modes on Olympus OM manual focus 35mm SLR cameras (see list below), including program and spot where available. It also works on Olympus Auto Focus and Power Focus SLRs with restrictions (more information in the Compatibility section below). This description is copyright © Heritage Cameras. Maximum aperture is f/3.5-4.5 and the lens stops down to f/22-32 for maximum depth of field (with half stops between f/5.6 and f/16). A depth of field preview button is provided.

Multicoated (MC) glass for reduced flare and light light loss with increased contrast and colour fidelity. Standard 62mm screw thread for filters and other accessories. Optical design comprises 15 elements in 10 groups. The lens is extremely well built (in Japan), with a solid, metal barrel in high gloss black and chrome-plated metal lens mount, smooth controls and a very high standard of fit and finish with clear markings in multiple colours. It's quite compact at only 78mm (3.1") long at its smallest settings on the camera, up to 67mm (2.6") in diameter and a reassuring 470g (16.6oz) without accessories.

Olympus never sold a 28-85mm zoom lens for its OM manual focus SLRs, though a prototype was shown and an AF version was available later (not usable on manual cameras).

An excellent zoom lens for Olympus OM manual focus film cameras, and usable on many others.
