This Cullmann CX40 Data-Zoom flash unit is extremely well built, very powerful, and has a huge range of features. It comes with an interchangeable SCA non-dedicated module which is usable on many film and digital cameras with a standard hot shoe, including popular models such as the Fujifilm S9500, S9600, S100FS, S200EXR, HS10 and many others. The bounce and twin flash features also make it perfect for many popular 3D and stereo cameras such as the popular Nimslo and Nishika models. The flash is in fully working order, very good used condition, supplied with a copy of the instructions and new Alkaline batteries. Please check the full description for more compatibility information.

The flash head can tilt up to 90 degrees vertically and swivel 90 degrees in each direction horizontally for bounce flash in portrait or landscape orientations. Bounce flash gives softer, more natural lighting than direct flash and reduces the chance of redeye. The head can even tilt down by 10 degrees, for close up shots where normal flash units would miss the subject altogether. A secondary flash tube is built in to fill in the shadows when using bounce flash – great for portraits. The zoom head adjusts the angle of coverage for 24mm extra wide angle, 35mm wide angle, 50mm standard, 70mm portrait and 100mm or longer telephoto on 35mm film and full frame digital cameras (or the equivalent on other formats). This is a very wide range (many zoom flashes only manage 28-85mm) giving extra coverage at the wide end, and extra distance at the long one.

This is a very powerful flash unit with guide numbers of 50m (160ft) at 100mm, 40m (130ft) at 50mm and 28m (90ft) at 24mm zoom with ISO 100. Exposure control is very sophisticated with four automatic ranges, plus full power, 1/4 manual and winder settings. This description is copyright © Heritage Cameras. The auto modes give a choice of settings (f/4, f/5.6, f/8 or f/11) to suit the subject. Thyristor circuitry is used for reduced recycling times and more flashes per set of batteries at close distances on auto or lower power manual settings.

A comprehensive control panel with digital LCD on the rear includes film speeds from ISO 25 to 800, apertures from f/1.0 to f/45 in 1/3-stops, auto and manual ranges for all modes and zoom settings with distances from 1.4 to a rather optimistic 328 feet (0.5 to 100 meters!). A ready light, test button and secondary flash indicator are provided, and an auto check indicator confirms correct exposure. The flash measures around 150mm (6") tall on the camera, and weighs approximately 420g (14.9oz) with module but without batteries. Power is supplied by 4x standard AA batteries which are inexpensive and easily obtainable. Disposable Alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable NiCd or NiMH types can be used. The flash has a power saving circuit which switches it off automatically after a period without use.

In addition to the non-dedicated hot shoe module supplied, this flash is compatible with other industry-standard SCA 300 dedicated modules (not included – see below), many of which can provide TTL auto flash exposure control, auto setting of shutter speeds and/or apertures, and many other automatic features with suitable film cameras and selected early digital models.

An outstanding flash unit for most film or digital cameras.

Compatibility

This flash fits cameras with a standard hot shoe. These have been fitted to cameras for generations including many 35mm SLR and rangefinder cameras, medium format models and even many modern digital types.

NOTE: Many older flashguns have high trigger voltages – sometimes hundreds of volts – which can theoretically damage modern electronic cameras. We've tested this flash, and it has a low trigger voltage of 6.2v, which should be suitable for most cameras. The ISO standard specifies 24v, though the most voltage-intolerant Canon EOS models specify up to 6v.

The flash works with non-dedicated operation. You set the shutter speed and aperture on the camera in M mode, and the flash then adjusts its output automatically depending on the distance. Suitable cameras include many compact and SLR film or digital models with a hot shoe from Canon, Chinon, Contax, Fujica, Fujifilm, Kodak, Konica, Leica, Mamiya, Minolta, Miranda, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Praktica, Ricoh, Rolleiflex, Sigma, Vivitar, Yashica and many, many others.

It's ideal for classic digital cameras such as the Epson R-D1 series, Fujifilm S9500, S9600, S100FS, S200EXR and HS10, Leica Digilux 1, Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ10, FZ20, FZ30 and LC5, Pentax EI-2000, Ricoh Caplio GX, GX8, GX100 and GX200 etc.

Please note that it's NOT suitable for cameras with a non-standard flash shoe such as many Minolta or Konica Minolta Dynax, Maxxum, Alpha or Vectis, many Sony Alpha digital, Nikon 1 series digital and other similar cameras.

With suitable 3D and stereo cameras this twin flash is ideal for many indoor subjects as it can light the foreground subject and background more equally, which helps the 3D, stereo or wigglegram effect look more realistic. The twin flash feature should be set to on for the foreground, and the main tube bounce angle adjusted to illuminate the background. Suitable models include the Nimslo 3D camera, Nishika N8000 and N9000 3D, FED Stereo, Holga 135 TIM etc.

Optional dedication with SCA modules
For dedicated use, SCA 300 modules are used (not included), and these were available for most manual focus 35mm cameras, plus some AF ones and many medium format SLR systems. The SCA system was a European industry standard, and is used by flash makers such as Metz, Agfa, Braun, Bauer, Cullmann, Osram, Regula and others. Modules were available for cameras including Canon A, T, F-1N, Canon T90, Olympus OM/Praktica, Minolta X/CLE/5000/7000/9000, Nikon MF, Nikon F3, Leica R4-R7, Rollei medium format, Ricoh KR, XR, Pentax MF/AF/645, Contax/Yashica, Bronica ETRSi/SQAi, Hasselblad, Mamiya RZ67 and Mamiya 645 Pro TL. AF modules were available for systems including Nikon AF, Canon EOS, Minolta AF and Maxxum/Dynax, Olympus AF and others. Please note that SCA 300 modules and flash units are usually NOT compatible with the TTL dedicated flash control systems used by most digital cameras (the exceptions are some early Pentax and Fujifilm DSLRs), but some can be used in conventional auto modes. Other SCA accessories were available (not supplied), including off-camera grips, brackets and extension leads.
