Decals by DEKLS provide markings for a selection of two factory prototypes and  two trials aircraft operated by the Royal Australian Navy.

Developed from the IKARA anti-submarine torpedo carrying missile, the TURANA was an advanced gunnery and missile defence training drone, designed and built in Australia by the Government Aircraft Factories (GAF).

It was intended the TURANA would replace the JINDIVIK target drones.

The TURANA was powered by a small gas turbine Microturbo 022-01 Cougar jet engine of approx. 80 kg thrust with a detachable solid booster rocket for launch from a warship’s IKARA missile launcher. 

Remote control manoevering of the drone provided aquisition, tracking and missile guidance practice for RAN ships defence operators.  At the end of flight time, the drone deployed a parachute allowing recovery for re-use.

First flight was made in August 1971 at the WOOMERA Rocket Range and the first ship launch was from HMAS SWAN in January 1974.

Though a brilliant concept, the program was cancelled in 1979 as water ingress during recovery of the drone was causing failure of the electronics. 

Jindiviks carried on in the role until until the BAE KALKARA entered service in February 1999.

Hobartville Hobbies is a small Australian business who has taken a bold step in producing kits for Australian theme subjects.  They produce lovely kits of subjects not commonly. or previously at all, available.

Yes, they are not cheap, but the modeller who understands a little about the production process and market size will realise they are getting a good deal.  Dont expect a Tami-Gawa-Airfix kit....if they could sell 50,000 of these, they would have produced the subject years ago!

Very nicely detailed kit will require careful modelling.
