For a long time in Japan, the HO scale, which uses 1:80 scale and 16.5mm gauge tracks, was the mainstream.

However, there were a great many enthusiasts who questioned that these were not HO scale because the actual scale of HO scale is 1:87.

The standard gauge of actual Japanese railroads is 1067 mm, so the gauge would be 12 mm for HO scale.

This led Japanese model railroad manufacturers to begin producing model trains in 12mm gauge.

HOj gauge or HO1067 gauge or HOn3-1/2 gauge is the standard name for 1:87 scale, 12 mm gauge, Japanese conventional (1067 mm gauge) model trains.

They are treated in the same standard as the HOm gauge released by Ferro-Suisse, Lemaco and Bemo.

The JNR Class Kiwa-90 was built by Niigata Engineering in 1960. It's a very peculiar car, as you can see, with a boxcar appearance and just the addition of a DMH17C diesel engine and a driver's cab. However, the underpowered DMH17C engine struggled to pull even two cars, causing speed to drop on slight inclines, making its performance almost impractical. Additionally, while it could carry 7 tons of cargo, the need for transfer at mainline connection stations added to its operational challenges. Also, without cargo, there was a risk of wheel spinning due to reduced axle weight, necessitating either cargo or weights for balance. Due to these unfortunate characteristics, it retired in 1971 without ever seeing practical use, making it quite a tragic railcar.
