Isamu Noguchi Design, Japanese paper Lighting Masterpiece “AKARI 9AD”
The lighting sculpture named “AKARI” was created in 1952 from the encounter between Isamu Noguchi and Gifu chochin, a traditional industry in Gifu.

The properties of Japanese paper that gently diffuse light, and the roughly and irregularly strung bamboo strips that form the framework, allow the shrinkage and wrinkles of the Japanese paper to remain intact, making it more than just a lighting device. The bold shape that appears when you pull up a lantern that has been folded flat makes it a sculpture of light.

Isamu Noguchi's production approach, which is strictly focused on the properties of the materials, is a quality found in traditional Japanese crafts, and the lightness and ephemerality of "AKARI" are also traditional Japanese crafts. It is based on the aesthetic sense of

The simple shape makes the delicate texture of the genuine Mino paper stand out even more, and the light that spreads through the paper creates a lyrical nuance, soothing the tired mind and body with its pale, gentle light.

This work by Isamu Noguchi immediately attracted attention from all over the world for its brilliant revival of a beautiful craft unique to Japan into modern times, and was awarded the Japan Good Design Award and was included in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It is still widely used in homes and offices around the world.

This is Isamu Noguchi's representative work, the fruition of his philosophy and Japanese aesthetic sense, which seeks to express an infinite world in simple things.
