ENGINEERING TROOPS OF THE RUSSIAN ARMY

Engineering units were already present in the Russian army of the pre-Petrine period. They were auxiliary units as part of the artillery.

Peter I paid great attention to engineering units: in the school of the cannon order were trained military engineers in addition to artillerymen; in the table of ranks in 1722 engineering officers had one rank higher than that of infantry and cavalry.

In 1727, Peter II issued a decree, which finally consolidates the independence of engineering troops. But the number of these troops is insignificant and they are increased only during military campaigns. By 1803 there were two engineering regiments (1st and 2nd Pioneer Regiments) in the Russian Army. By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812 in two pioneer regiments there were 14 companies and they were distributed on the garrisons of fortresses and the major army formations and, in fact, represented an independent unit.
