Private of the
Astrakhan cuirassier regiment in full dress, 1812 (Russia)
ASTRAKHAN CUIRASIR
REGIMENT
The Astrakhan
Cuirassier Regiment was formed in 1811. The set came from 14 different cavalry
units of the Russian army.
The cuirassiers of the
regiment especially distinguished themselves in the battle for the Semenovsky
ravine (one of the important episodes of the Battle of Borodino). From this
battle, the Russian cuirassiers (Borozdin's brigade, which included the
Astrakhan cuirassier regiment) emerged victorious and turned back the best
heavy cavalry in Europe at that time: the French and Saxon cuirassiers, called
"iron horsemen". But the price of this victory was very high, out of
597 cuirassiers of the Astrakhan regiment, only 95 survived.
