Drummers and flutists in the Napoleonic army were military ranks and served under the same conditions as ordinary soldiers. The musicians of the orchestra were civilian employees and signed a contract for a certain period. The orchestra was led by a bandmaster (with the rank of senior sergeant). All the musicians of the regiment were subordinate to the drum major of the regiment (in the rank of senior sergeant), including the drum majors of the battalions (in the rank of sergeants).
