The Coronation of His Majesty The King took place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May 2023 . This historic event marked the crowning of King Charles III and was the first coronation of a new monarch in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries since 1953.
To mark the occasion, we are proud to introduce the first ever coronation 50p coin featuring an all-new design specially created for this iconic royal event.
The obverse features the first official uncrowned portrait of the monarch, designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings and personally approved by His Majesty the King. The crowned effigy is reserved specifically for commemorative and collectible coins and will not feature on circulated coins, making it a true collectors item.
In keeping with tradition, The King’s portrait faces to the left, the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth.
