This very early Ward & Lock pictorial travel guide is one of the original green board covered guides which preceded the moire familiar "red" guides published between 1880 and 1891. They are full of contemporary woodcut illustrations, advertisements and fold-out maps and plans.
These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. Please see my Ward Lock Red Guides website for more information about the series. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.
This particular guide dates from 1889. Details as follows :
Area covered : London and it environs.
Contents : 222 pages of text, plus a 62-page listing of 35,000 cab fares, and over 100 pages of wonderful old contemporary advertisements. 80 illustrations.
Overall condition : Very good, but some wear and also missing the front map.
Maps : The fold out map of London is missing from the front of the guide, but all the 9 fold out route sketch plan are all present. They are in excellent condition with very little wear and no markings or damage.
Covers : Normal wear, with superficial grubbiness and rubbing/bumping to the edges. No other markings or damage.
Spine : Normal wear, with superficial grubbiness. Splitting and scuffing down both side edges, within couple of tiny strips of board missing. No other markings or damage.
Binding : The binding of the text block is excellent. Cracks inside both covers.
Pages : Very good. Very little wear or discolouration. A few very faint pencil margin annotations (could be erased). No other markings or damage.
