Dark Blue Historical Staffordshire Plate 10 1/8”
Andrew Stevenson
Culford Hall, Suffolk c. 1820s

We are offering a dark blue, Historical Staffordshire plate depicting Culford Hall in Suffolk, England. It measures about 10 1/8” and was made by Andrew Stevenson as part of the Stevenson Rose Boarder series.

The plate is in good condition with no chips nor cracks. There are several lite surface scratches on the front and a couple of pinpoint spots where there is no glaze. These are pictured for you.

The back is impressed with the "A Stevenson Warranted Staffordshire" around a crown mark and stamped with the pattern mark.

This charming plate depicts Culford Hall, located about five miles north of Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk. Built in 1540 for Sir Nicholas Bacon, it was remodelled in the 1790s by Samuel Wyatt for the first Marquis Cornwallis. Cornwallis was the British general who led the army against the American Revolution. His defeat at Yorktown, in 1781 effectively ended the war. He then served twice as governor-general of India and once as viceroy of Ireland. The estate remained in the Cornwallis family until the second Marquis died in 1823, by which time it had been greatly extended. After being rebuilt in 1889, it is now a school.
