Signed by the Author, and dedicated to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, in half red leather binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt fillets, raised gilt bands, gilt titles, page top edges gilt, marbled paste downs and end papers, portrait frontispiece, 20 illustrations/photographs including the frontispiece.

Audrey Evelyn James (married names Coats, Field, and Pleydell-Bouverie) (1902 - 1968) was an English socialite included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. Through her mother she was the illegitimate granddaughter of Edward VII and herself was the illegitimate daughter of Sir Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon. Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie counted royalty, prime ministers and celebrities amngst her closest friends. She was raised by her mother and US steel magnate William Dodge James, but is thought to have been the daughter of Liberal politician Sir Edward Grey (Wikipedia and Tatler).

• Page edges – good condition – top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges plain with minor foxing.

• Hinges – good condition – sound.
• Paste downs – good condition – marbled, ‘XMAS S.B. 1965’ is printed in gilt along the bottom edge of the front paste down.
• End papers – good condition – marbled, the book binders name is printed along the top edge on the reverse of the front end paper, the author has signed this on one of the subsequent end papers.
• Title – good condition – half title present, clean and bright.
• Pages – good condition – b/w portrait frontispiece plus 19 further photographs throughout, text is clean and bright, minor mark to page 493.
• Binding – good condition.
