Full vellum binding over flexible boards, gilt titles and gilt decorations, cotton ties attached (one missing), tissue guarded frontispiece.

John Milton's 'Milton's Comus' with additional notes and a family memoir by Lady Alix Egerton Milton's 'Comus' is piece on the honour of chastity. Presented in 1634 to the Earl of Bridgewater to mark his new position as Lord President of Wales. With additional material by Lady Alix Egerton.

John Milton, born December 1608 is widely regarded as one of the preeminent writers in the English language. A strong believer in free speech and freedom of the press, Milton is known to have written openly against censorship. He reached international renown during his lifetime, in part to his writing in Latin, Greek and Italian, as well as in English. His influence can be felt in the work of many of his literary successors, including William Blake, and later authors such as George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. Collated complete. In full vellum binding with gilt detailing and ribbon ties. One of the ribbon ties is missing.

• Spine – good condition – faded, rubbed and worn, gilt titles, 4 compartments with gilt decoration, 6 triple lined bands.
• Joints – good condition – rubbed and worn.
• Corners – good condition – bumped and worn.
• Boards – good condition – vellum binding over flexible card, yapp board edges, blind tooled borders with gilt decoration albeit rubbed and worn in places, the vellum is marked and worn, 3 ribbon ties (one missing).
• Page edges – good condition – top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut, tanned and foxed.

Internally

• Hinges – good condition – intact.
• Paste downs – good condition – plain, lightly tanned with some foxing.
• End papers – good condition – plain, tanned and foxed.
• Title – good condition – red and black text, small b/w vignette to the centre, lightly tanned with some foxing to the edges.
• Pages – good condition – half title present, tissue guarded portrait frontispiece ‘John Egerton, 1^st Earl of Bridgewater’ plus 7 further illustrations (one tissue guard missing) and 3 copy facsimile pages, tanned and foxed throughout.
• Binding – good condition.
