I have here for sale a book entitled BIG HORSE'S FLIGHT The Trail of War in Central Asia by Sven Hedin, translated by F H Lyon.  It is a first edition published by Macmillan and Co Ltd, London in 1936.  This is the first of Hedin's volumes on his expedition to Sinkiang (now known as Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) to mark out two roads to link China proper to this remote province.  The account was too lengthy to fit in one volume, so he divided it into three sections - the War, the Road, the Lake.  this is the first.  The tells the story fo the bloody war which made a desert of Sinkiang from 1931 to 1934, in which the expedition became entangled.  The chief character is the young Tungan general Ma Chung-yin.  Ma is Chinese for prophet Mohammed, but also means horse, thus this leader became known as Big Horse.  There are 122 b/w plates throughout the book, one of which is colour and there is a fold-out colour map of the course of the expedition.

Black cloth hardboards with a red title block with gilt lettering to the spine.  Very slight bumping to one corner, otherwise boards in fine condition.  Light foxing here and there.  Spotting to page edges.  Binding firm.  248 pages, 22 x 15 cm.
