To mark the 60th anniversary of Enforcement of the Local Autonomy Law, the Japan Mint launched "Japan 47 Prefectures Coin Program" in 2008. In this program, there will be Silver colorized coins of 47 prefectures in Japan issued for several years (an 8-year series). Obverse is each prefecture's own design.

This 4th largest prefecture is located in the central region of Japan's mainland and faces 8 prefectures, the largest number among other prefectures. Nagano is surrounded by mountains standing 3000 m above the sea level, and they are called the Japan Alps.
