This 18th century colonial damsel stands proudly beside this historically significant cookbook, which reflects much about the dietary habits and social life of the households of early tidewater Virginia.

Faithfully presented here in the written English of that era, these recipes are as much about community as they are about kitchens. Originally printed in 1742 by William Parks of Williamsburg who drew upon the tastes of citizens at the time, many of whom were of English ancestry, and as such reflecting English palates. An excellent preface summarizes the history of its compilation over time, and this particular volume was the efforts of Mrs. Helen Bullock of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1938.
