This is a 1940 QMC 8-31D Enlisted Man's Service Coat, more specifically an 18-oz. OD (color 33) Serge Wool Coat, aka U.S. Army Dress Jacket. It is stamped inside (roughly) 36R.

Even though it has no stamped date, the back design features date it to 1940 for instance: bi-swing back, sewn in cloth half-belt, hooks for garrison belt, and longer rear vent.

The 2 metal hooks can be seen on the back. They were meant to suspend the GARRISON BELT--NOT INCLUDED.

There are 4 front closure buttons; 1 each on the 4 pockets; and 2 on the shoulder loops (epaulettes). All nice, shiny brass for a total of 10 buttons.

Except for a few small holes (1 is shown on back, about 1/16"), it is in good condition. NOTE: color is typical dark olive drab color--despite my pics.

This is 1 of 10 items of clothing from a WW2 vet who I believe was part of the elite 1ST SERVICE FORCE (FSSF) commando group known as the Devil's Brigade or Black Devils. (See the garrison cap with correct piping for sale.)
