This very early Ward Lock & Co. illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1892 and 1902/03. These were the first of those with the copperplate script design on the cover and with the words "Shilling Pictorial Guide" at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. They are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.
These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. Please see my Ward Lock Red Guides website for more information about the series. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.
This particular guide dates from 1901/02. This is the 3rd edition of this title. Details as follows :
Area covered : Cromer, including Sheringham, Mundesley and surrounding parts of North Norfolk.
Contents : 130 pages of text, plus 90 pages of wonderful old contemporary advertisements. 50 illustrations.
Overall condition : Very good, but slight external wear.
Maps : Excellent. The fold out map and 3 sketch plans are all present and complete with no markings or damage.
Covers : Normal wear. Slight fading to black design. Faint superficial grubbiness. No other markings or damage
Spine : Normal wear. Slight fading to the black title, and slight superficial rubbing. No other markings or damage.
Binding : Very good. Just a faint crack inside the front cover.
Pages : Very good. Very little wear. Some discolouration to edges. No markings or damage.
