This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1901 and 1910. These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. They are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.
These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. Please see my Ward Lock Red Guides website for more information about the series. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.
This particular guide dates from 1906/07. This is the 3rd edition of this title. Details as follows :
Area covered : The Isle of Man, including Douglas, Castletown, Port Erin, Port St Mary, Peel, Ramsey and all the other towns and villages on the island.
Contents : 216 pages of text. 3 maps (all present and complete). Over 70 illustrations. 90 pages of wonderful old contemporary advertisements.
Overall condition : Very good internally, but some external wear.
Maps : Very good. The maps are both present and complete. Very little wear. There is a single 6" tear to the first map (no loss) but no other markings or damage.
Covers : Normal wear. Slight fading to black design. No markings or damage.
Spine : Rather worn. Superficial bumping and creasing, and some scuffing to the edges - but no loss. No other markings or damage.
Binding : Slightly loose.
Pages : Very good. Very little wear. Slight discolouration at edges. No markings or damage.
