the Russian manufacturer and financier A.L. Stieglitz on January 28,
1857
with the aim of building the railways net spreading to about 4000 versts
(4240 km). It passed through 26 provinces, connecting Saint Petersburg,
Warsaw, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, main navigable rivers and two ports on
the Black and the Baltic seas.
