This is a high quality Canon flash unit with TTL auto exposure control, AF illuminator and power zoom, dedicated for most Canon EOS 35mm and APS film SLR cameras (but NOT the 300X or any digital models). It's in fully working order, good used condition, supplied with original case, a copy of the instructions and Alkaline batteries. Please read the full description for more important information.

Automatic power zoom system, covering 28mm and 35mm wide angle, 50mm standard and 70mm (or longer) telephoto. This gives wider coverage or longer range as appropriate, and the flash even compensates as you change the focal length on a zoom lens. This description is copyright © Heritage Cameras. Guide number varies up to 30m (100ft) at 70mm setting (22m/73ft at 28mm) with ISO 100 film. This gives a theoretical maximum range of up to 17m (56ft) with a 50mm f/1.8 standard lens and ISO 100 film, but as always with flash the actual range will depend on the conditions.

Canon A-TTL (Advanced Through The Lens) flash metering is available on Canon EOS SLR cameras. This is the most accurate flash system available, with readings taken directly from the film during the exposure. It works with any aperture, and automatically allows for filters and close up accessories. The flash sets the shutter speed and/or aperture (depending on the exposure mode) automatically and displays a flash ready indication in the viewfinder. Works in all exposure modes, including program. Automatic fill-in flash in daylight, helping to balance the exposure for the subject and background. An Auto OK indicator on the rear of the flash confirms correct exposure in TTL mode. Thyristor circuitry for fast recycling and more flashes per set of batteries.

Works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has a large AF illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light. This operates automatically when required (with suitable cameras), so you can take AF pictures in complete darkness! First and second curtain sync modes. Second curtain sync is great for slow sync situations with moving subjects, providing a frozen main image with a blurred trail extending behind the subject for an excellent impression of movement.

This Canon Speedlite 300Z flash is very nicely made (in Japan), yet is only around 90mm (3.5") tall on the camera, and weighs only 215g (7.6oz) without batteries. A locking wheel allows the flash to be fixed tightly to the camera's hot shoe. Power is supplied by 4x standard AA batteries, and Alkaline disposable (supplied) or NiCd and NiMH rechargeables can be used. The battery cover is captive, so it can't easily be dropped or lost. The flash shuts itself off after a while if it's not used, to save battery power.

An excellent flashgun for most Canon EOS film users.

Compatibility

This flash is compatible with almost all Canon EOS 35mm film SLR cameras including the EOS 1 series, 3, 5, 10, 30, 33, 50, 50E, 100, 300, 300V, 500, 500N, 600, 620, 630, 650, 700, 750, 850, 1000 series, 3000 series, 5000 and RT, plus the equivalent Rebel, Elan and Kiss models and many others, but NOT the EOS 300X (Rebel T2, Kiss 7) – see below. It also works with the Canon EOS IX, IX E and IX-7 (IX Lite) APS film models.

The flash offers fully automatic exposure in all modes, including program. TTL (Through The Lens), OTF (Off The Film) flash metering for the most accurate exposures possible. Automatic setting of shutter speed and/or aperture in appropriate modes, with flash ready signal in the viewfinder.

TTL flash units like this one are NOT fully compatible with any EOS digital cameras, PowerShot digital compacts or the EOS 300X (EOS Rebel T2, EOS Kiss 7) 35mm film SLR. These use a completely different E-TTL dedicated flash system, and you need Canon's own EX series flash units, or modern independent flash units with E-TTL which are specifically stated to be digital compatible. It's NOT compatible with Canon manual focus cameras, the EF-M or any other make, though it may operate manually on some models.
