1603 William Camden History of
Britain Ireland Norman Invasion Wm the Conqueror
“The best edition of Camden!”
A fine, early 17th-century printing of William Camden’s “Anglica, Normannica, Hibernica, Cambrica, a
veteribus scripta.” This second edition is considered the best edition of
this work (Payne & Foss) and is a work of historical texts related to the
history of Britain. It includes famous battles and invasions, such as the
William the Conqueror’s Norman invasion of Ireland. In the late 12th-century,
Gerald of Wales wrote a history of Henry II conquest of Ireland. Camden created
a modern approach to the histories of England, and in this Latin text, includes
specimen of Old English which would be the “Preface to Gregory’s Pastoral Care,
taken from Parker’s Asser.” (Adams, Old
English Scholarship). This book was
famously in Thomas Jefferson’s Library (Gilreath & Wilson).
