Jigoro Kano Sensei was born on October 28, 1860, as the third son of Jirokichi, also known as Kishin, and Sadako in Gokan village, Settsu Province, located in present-day Myoen-cho, Higashinada-ku, Kobe City. His childhood name was Shinnosuke. Myoen was renowned for its sake breweries, and the Kano family was one of the prominent brewing families there. At the age of 10, Jigoro lost his mother. His father, Jirokichi, took up an official position in Tokyo, so at the age of 11, Jigoro moved to Tokyo with him.

At the age of 15, he enrolled in the English language department of the Tokyo Foreign Language School and then entered the prestigious Gakushuin School the following year. When he turned 18 in the 10th year of the Meiji era (1877), he enrolled in the newly established Tokyo Imperial University. Around the time of his graduation in the 14th year of the Meiji era (1881), he developed a strong interest in education. Even after graduating, he remained at the university and became a lecturer at Gakushuin. It was during his time at Tokyo University that he began studying and researching jujutsu, which eventually led to the creation of judo.

In the 15th year of the Meiji era (1882), he established a small school at Eishoji Temple in Inaricho, Shitaya, where he began teaching judo to a few students. This eventually grew into the Kano Juku. He used a seven-tatami room in the temple as his living quarters and a twelve-and-a-half-tatami room behind the main hall as the dojo, which marked the birth of Kodokan Judo.
