Chinese Lacquer Box
A late 19th or early 20th century Chinese lacquered wood wedding basket. These items were traditional wedding gifts and usually contained food. This example is quite elaborate with carved and gilded cinnabar lacquer panels and detailed gilt decorated panels. The handle is fixed in place and decorated in black and red with a gilt cloud pattern (an auspicious symbol). There are also good luck symbols and foliate designs and dragons in blue and mauve. The top lid comes off to reveal an internal tray which is removable, below this the base is plain. It is a very evocative design and is bound to stand out and become a feature item and talking point. Not something you see very often and a highly decorative example with desirable lacquer panels.
Condition Some period wear and rubbing. Losses to the gilding particularly to the carved lacquer panels. No significant damages. See images for general condition.
