Description

Sumerian foundation tablet

Dimensions :-

Length - 5.8cm / 2-1/2 inches

Width - 5 cm / 2 inches

On offer here is a fine replica of a temple foundation tablet that would have been incorporated into the structure of the building.

Dedicated by Gudea, the governor of the city of Lagash, he dreamed of rebuilding the ruined Eninnu temple for the deity Ningursu. This he did in spectacular style and documentation survives describing the day the God’s statue returned to the restored temple.

This tablet describes Gudea’s dedication to the project in fine cuneiform text. In the first line a group of cuneiform that looks like a star or an asterisk precedes the mention of the deity Ningursu.
On the third line the same cuneiform ‘star’ precedes the deity Enlil.

Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone that has an aged patina.
