Vintage Port and Old Wines

The cork in a bottle of Vintage Port wine can sometimes become fragile and difficult to remove with the traditional corkscrew, mainly due to the age of the wine, as the cork in contact with the wine tends to deteriorate, to avoid these setbacks when extracting the cork and this due to its condition being able to break, Port wine tongs are the utensil specifically used to remove the cork without breaking it and therefore not spoiling the wine.

Mode of use

The tongs of the tongs are designed to grip the neck of the bottle, the tongs are heated to a very high temperature over a strong flame, once ready, the two tongs wrap around the neck of the bottle for a period of approximately 30 to 45 seconds, You can use a finger below to measure the temperature of the glass, but be careful not to burn yourself. As soon as you remove the tongs, add a few drops of very cold water to the area where the tongs were wrapped around the neck.

The thermal reaction of the cold water in contact with the heated glass causes the glass to break in the neck area, this is the objective you want, remove the cork with a dry cloth, being careful not to cut yourself and at the same time Clean the broken glass area with water as you remove the cork, HAVE FUN!!!!

This is a unique ritual that requires some practice but is surprising and is part of several customs that, over the centuries, have developed and reinforce the enjoyment of a wine as special as Vintage Port.
