Austro-Hungarian Silver Crucifix - Antique Circa 1890

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique 1890s Austro-Hungarian silver crucifix; an addition to our religious silverware collection

Description

This exceptional antique Austro-Hungarian silver crucifix has been crafted in .800 standard silver.

The impressive cross design is ornamented with a cast and applied figure of Jesus Christ, below the plaque bearing the contemporary engraved initials 'INRI'; (Latinate 'INRI', Greek 'INBI') pertaining to 'Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews'.

Each cross bar terminates with a pierced decorated tri-lobed foliated design.

The upper portion of the cross bears a plain ring loop, allowing the piece to be hung vertically.

The hallmarks to the reverse of this antique silver cross includes:

Maker's mark: JCK (untraced)

Silver quality/purity mark: Dianakopf mark* (.800, 800/1000)

* This variation of the Dianakopf mark was used for Austro-Hungarian silver between 1872-1922; this mark, in addition to the style, determines the date of this service as circa 1890.

Condition

This 19th century silver crucifix is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The hallmarks struck to the reverse surface of the cross are very clear; the Assay office portion of the Dianakopf mark is illegible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.
