1688 GREEK Periegetes Geography
Eustathius Atlas MAPS Orbis Greece Byzantine
Dionysius Periegetes was an ancient Greek geographer believed to have
lived sometime in the 2nd or 3rd-centuries. He is
remembered primarily for his description of the known world, believed to be one
of the earliest written world geographies. In the 12th-century,
Byzantine historian Eustathius of Thessalonica wrote a commentary on
Dionysius’s ‘Orbis Descriptio’ who
included numerous excerpts from other ancient Greek geographers and historians.
This 1688 Greek and Latin edition was collected and edited by William
Hill who included numerous folding maps. Two of the maps are particularly
desirable – the map of all of Europe and the map of Italy and the Greek
Islands.
