The firm of George Nixon and Co. Ltd had its origins in the 1880s, when George Nixon of Stockport became a trader in rabbit skins and fur for the hat trade. By 1900 he had a growing concern on the High Street in Stockport, with a score of employees making leather for hatbands. In 1906 he opened a tannery in Stockport, with the help of his two nephews, William and George Marsden.
George Nixon died in 1931, and his two nephews continued the successful business. Even at that time it was recognised that the hat trade had reached its peak, so a decision was made to enter the shoe and ancillary trades. Their new business at Ashton under Lyne expanded rapidly, and by the war had a far greater turnover than the parent business at Stockport.
This book provides a record of all those leather processes. Although in many cases these have been superseded by modern technology, it should be of interest and value to anyone entering the trade, or to those interested in the industries that provided a livelihood for Stockport and Ashton. The final section of travel diaries also provides a fascinating insight to the sources of supply in those days.
