This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1910 and 1918. These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. A small number of the last editions from this period (dated 1917/18 and 1918/19) had the spine price updated to 1/6d net.
The guides are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.
These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. Please see the Ward Lock Red Guides website for more information about the series. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.
This particular guide dates from 1913/14. This appears to be the 1st edition of this title. Details as follows :
Area covered : St. Ives and Western Cornwall, including Carbis Bay, Penzance, Land's End and surrounding areas.
Contents : 146 pages of text plus a 98-page section of wonderful old contemporary advertisements. 6 maps and plans (all of which are present). 70 illustrations.
Overall condition : Very good, but slight external wear.
Maps : Excellent. All the maps and plans remain in place. Very little wear. No markings or damage.
Covers : Very good. Normal wear. Slight fading to black design. Slight superficial marking to front cover (see scan). No other markings or damage.
Spine : Normal wear. Faint superficial splitting to cloth. No other markings or damage.
Binding : Very good. Just slightly loose.
Pages : Very good. Normal wear. Some discolouration at edges. No markings or damage.
