This lens is practically no different from Jupiter-8 2/50. Jupiter-8 1:2 F = 5cm P - is a standard lens for many rangefinder cameras.

The letter 'P' in the name of the lens indicates coated optics. I didn't notice any difference in brightness by eye. The same applies to the image quality of two lenses with ‘P’ and without ‘P’.

Lenses with an M39 mounting thread (for rangefinder cameras, M39 X 1/28.8), such as the lens from this lot, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital cameras (both SLR and mirrorless), for this you just need to choose the right adapter (adapter). There is no need to carry out any additional actions to modify the lens.

Jupiter is a family of photographic anastigmat lenses of the Zonnar type, produced in the USSR since 1948. Most “Jupiters” are created for small-format cameras, but some film lenses, as well as optics for special types of equipment, also bear the same name.

Jupiter lenses appeared in the USSR after the end of the war, when design documentation, supplies of raw materials and production equipment for the manufacture of German photographic equipment were received as reparations. After 1945, all German patents were canceled by the countries of the Anti-Hitler coalition, and free copying of pre-war developments was allowed. The first Jupiters were Soviet versions of the Zeiss Sonnar series lenses.

However, they are not literal copies, since the original Zonnars required certain types of optical glass that were not produced in the Soviet Union. Therefore, from July 1947 to April 1949, under the leadership of optician Mikhail Maltsev, 4 Zonnar lenses were re-designed at GOI for the glass range available in the USSR. However, until 1954, some of them were produced at KMZ from exported stocks of German glass called “Jupiter”. First of all, the interchangeable lenses developed by Ludwig Bertele back in 1932 for Contax cameras were copied: Zeiss Sonnar 50/1.5; Zeiss Sonnar 50/2.0 and Zeiss Sonnar 85/2.0. They were intended for the Soviet copy of the same cameras, the production of which was launched at the Kiev Arsenal plant under the name “Kyiv”.

At the same time, in December 1947, the fast Zeiss Sonnar 180/2.8 telephoto lens was redesigned for Soviet glass, intended for combining a rangefinder camera with a Flektoskop mirror attachment. Later it was released with the label “Jupiter-6” for the newly launched Zenit. The successful launch of mass production of Soviet copies of the Zonnars made it possible to soon begin our own developments based on this concept. This is how lenses created for the first SLR cameras and 16 mm movie cameras appeared. Due to the peculiarities of the optical principle laid down by Bertele, most Jupiters were telephoto lenses with high aperture. At the time of the appearance of Jupiter-3, it was the fastest normal lens in the USSR.
